Sweden's AI minister: the case for a dedicated artificial intelligence portfolio
Sweden does not have a minister for artificial intelligence. aiminister.se is a citizen-led campaign asking every party in the Swedish parliament to appoint one after the general election on 13 September 2026.
This page is an English summary of the campaign. The full material — policy analysis, healthcare case studies and EU AI Act guides — is published in Swedish.
Why Sweden is falling behind
Sweden's rank in the Tortoise Global AI Index
Regions and municipalities running separate AI efforts
Cabinet ministers with a consolidated AI mandate
Sweden has world-class research, a strong tech sector and a national AI centre. What it lacks is political ownership: AI responsibility is spread across at least four ministries and a dozen agencies, so pilot projects rarely scale into national services.
How other countries organise AI policy
United Arab Emirates
Appointed the world's first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in 2017, with a national AI strategy running to 2031.
United Kingdom
A dedicated AI minister inside DSIT, an AI Safety Institute and multi-billion pound compute and skills programmes.
United States
A National AI Initiative Office coordinating federal agencies, plus dedicated AI leadership inside the executive branch.
What an AI minister would do
- Own a single national AI strategy with measurable targets and a budget.
- Coordinate EU AI Act implementation and name a clear supervisory structure.
- Set shared data standards so regions and municipalities can scale AI services.
- Direct investment into compute, skills and public-sector adoption.
- Represent Sweden in EU and international AI negotiations with one voice.
